BIRDING IN MANUEL ANTONIO WHILE YOU CHILL OUT

Sloths Paradise
13 de December de 2019Last saturday a group of co workers got a message saying that Olive Ridley sea Turtles were already coming ashore in what is known as one of the most incredible nature’s wonders La Arribada – Mass Arrival, thousands of turtles gathering and looking an area to lay their eggs in 7 km of dark sand beach – Ostional Beach – where every year more than 500 thousand female Olive Ridley nest on this beach during 3 or 7 days in the months of september, october, november and december; becoming one the most important nesting places for this species and its conservation.
Is important to mention that all sea turtles species in the world are endangered and Olive Ridleys are the less endangered species considered by the red list of UICN as Vulnerable. This could be because of the nesting strategy of this species and the different conservation programs to preserve this and other species that nest on Ostional Beach.
However, every year the mortality of sea turtles and eggs for poachers, fishing, predators, climate change and plastic pollution is increasing and the number of turtles coming ashore in Arribadas is declining, showing the fact of the situation efforts for preservation should be more and complement with more environmental education to the coast communities to incitivate the eco tourism such a main economic activity.
I invite you if you ever have the chance to behold this event go and do it. Open your eyes and realize that you are not the only living being needing this planet.
